A través de sus representaciones abstractas de paisajes urbanos, el artista pretende retratar la soledad de la ciudad moderna. Cree que la construcción urbana encarna «la ausencia de la existencia, la ausencia de la nada y la ausencia de la ausencia», y su inclusión de materiales metálicos evoca imágenes de microchips y placas de circuito, investigando la relación entre lo real y lo virtual, lo que es natural y lo que se fabrica. El estilo de Hayakawa evolucionó a partir de su deseo de investigar la estratificación en las ilustraciones. Originalmente trabajó la escultura y la talla de madera antes de pasar al trabajo en papel, sintiéndose atraído por el potencial expresivo y la versatilidad del medio. Trabajó el acrílico sobre papel y la talla antes de pasar a trabajos arquitectónicos tridimensionales. Hay un elemento espiritual en su obra, relacionado con la noción budista de total interconexión. Sus métodos son meditativos, exigiendo un enfoque paciente, repetitivo y meticuloso.
