FIGURAS Y SUEÑOS

José María Córdoba

YUSTO / GINER presents “Figuras y Sueños”, in its Madrid space, an exhibition tribute to the artists José María Córdoba.

The work of the artist José María Córdoba is presented as a fascinating dialogue between modernity and tradition, where the essence of expressionism and cubism intertwine with renaissance references. His playful and ironic approach turns each composition into a fragment of reality, inviting the viewer to question appearances and to delve into the complexity of what surrounds us. Through his art, Córdoba not only recreates images, but also challenges perceptions of time and the order of the world.

José María Córdoba’s compositions are more than simple visual representations; they are gateways to a reflection on the hidden meanings behind each image. Each stroke and color is carefully thought out to provoke an emotional response that transcends the superficial, encouraging viewers to discover the underlying stories. This fusion of styles enriches his work and establishes a bridge between different periods and artistic currents.

As a versatile painter, sculptor and engraver, José María Córdoba characterizes his work with a deep literary background and a mixture of styles that embraces miscegenation and deconstruction. His use of color becomes a dreamlike character and symbol, exploring themes of mythology, Mediterranean sensuality and Jungian explorations, where the imaginary and the symbolic intertwine with reality. Since his arrival to Costa del Sol in 1981, he has evolved his technique, adopting deconstruction as the basis of his artistic analysis. His works, which once reflected influences of cubism and futurism, now present a play of shapes and colors that evoke a fractal world. This metaphysical approach is combined with a playful and spontaneous character, where elements such as the smile and the mask bring irony and references to commedia dell’arte, reflecting his rich background and his interest in merging fragments of reality with his own invention.

About the artist:

José María Córdoba began his career in the 1970s with realist sculptures and paintings with social themes, moving on to social expressionism between 1974 and 1977. A trip to Italy and the study of the Renaissance marked a shift towards metaphysics and incommunication. From 1981, he began experimenting with abstract and kinetic languages, and between 1984 and 1988, he returned to figuration, reflecting the vitality of the 1980s. His work embraced social themes and deconstruction, exploring love and death in wild expressionism from 1992 to 1994. From 1994 to 2004, he organized cycles on deconstruction and held exhibitions on a variety of themes, culminating in a retrospective at the Museo Municipal de Málaga in 2002. He is a multifaceted artist who fuses modernity and tradition, integrating expressionism, cubism and Renaissance references. His playful and ironic style invites the viewer to question appearances and explore the complexity of reality. After settling on the Costa del Sol in 1981, he has developed a technique based on deconstruction, creating works that evoke deep emotional responses and suggest a fractal world.
