BEHIND THE ORDER OF THINGS:

BEA SCACCIA | BRAGE MOREITE NØRHOLM | OLEKSII SHCHERBAK | SAM CREASEY | LISA IVORY | RAZVAN BOAR
YUSTO / GINER presents, in our space in Madrid, the group exhibition Behind the Order of Things by artists Bea Scaccia, Brage Moriete Nørholm, Lisa Ivory, Oleksii Shcherback, Razvan Boar and Sam Creasey, curated by Saša Bogojev.
As Surrealism emerged in the early 20th century, it introduced a new perspective on the world and our place within it. Giorgio de Chirico pioneered this movement with clear yet enigmatic imagery, while Dada artists challenged conventional standards by embracing absurdity and nihilism. Simultaneously, René Magritte resorted to blending different aesthetic and logical systems within a single image and inspired by Sigmund Freud’s theories, André Breton promoted unlocking the unconscious mind for true artistic expression. Since then, many artists have continued to explore ways of subverting the order of things, suggesting that nonsensical contradictions can coexist harmoniously.
Such artists show an urge to rise above the ordinary and reveal new, improbable opportunities. By tearing apart the fabric of reality, they examine impossible connections, construct new vistas, pair incompatible terms and concepts, and devise poetic yet puzzling imagery. They distort, manipulate, and question consciousness, proposing new ways of perceiving the ordinary and appreciating the extraordinary. Prompted by the idea that reality is stranger than one might think, their work encourages the experience and exploration of new sensations or any forms of oddity. Through their practice, they search for new meanings in existing things, occasionally tapping into the realm of dreams to harness the delightfully confusing effect of strangeness.
Emphasizing intuition and cherishing automatism in their methods, these artists aim to bypass rational thought to uncover the extraordinary. This approach fosters a space driven by the
subconscious, where familiar forms might emerge from chaotic marks or where qualities of other realities overlay commonplace scenes. Their work challenges established logic and aesthetics, yet it provides a language to discuss aspects of life beyond the everyday. Echoing Breton’s pantheistic worldview and the idea that our psyche transcends our physical being, the infinite appeal of such efforts lies in the fact that it’s not entirely possible to fully remove all the critical faculties of moral or aesthetic judgment. Still, it’s infinitely exciting and encouraging to keep trying, to keep peeking Behind the Order of Things.

BEA SCACCIA
Bea Scaccia (Veroli, Italy, 1978) currently lives and works in New York. Her painting explores the relationship between beauty, standards of appearance, and monstrosity, compressing these elements into canvases that challenge visual conventions. Her works draws inspiration from Flemish painting, the Baroque, and artists such as Francis Bacon and Domenico Gnoli. She also draws from literature, myths, and fairy tales, as well as magical realism and her own childhood in Italy, shaped by gender roles and social norms.
BRAGE MOREITE NØRHOLM
Brage M. Nørholm’s (Oslo, 1989) work focuses on portraits and expressions that blend Expressionism, Realism, and Surrealism. In addition to his artistic career, he has worked in psychiatry with young people struggling with drug addiction. Nørholm establishes a visual dialogue with the invisible aspects of the psyche. His art reflects both the darkness and absurdity of existence, as well as its beauty and mystery, acting as a mirror of the psychological landscapes that often remain hidden.
OLEKSII SHCHERBAK
Oleksii Shcherbak (b. 1997, Chemihiv) presently studies at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. His works act as reflections that take on a three-dimensional form of a subconscious and unstructured moving mass of sensations combined with mythical chimeras and portraits of heroes on canvas. Oleksii’s chimeras often serve as tools to reveal the psychological traits of the protagonist. He is often haunted by nostalgia for non-existent memories, of thoughts that flow in the absurdity and fluidity of time.
SAM CREASEY
Sam Creasey (b. 1993) lives and works in London. His practise researches the complex dialectic between the urban fabric’s natural spaces and its more technologically networked spaces. The relationship between human emotion, architecture and the sociological considerations of urban planning influence the narratives portrayed. The uncannily representational paintings often appear jaded and jagged in texture like the steel, concrete and glass that give the metropolis its physical form.
LISA IVORY
Lisa Ivory (b 1966) lives and works in London, UK. Her landscapes are commonly occupied by a Wildman, who occasionally interacts with a female human figure. There is a Rake’s Progress of sorts, with a skeletal Death figure interrupting the discourse between these characters. These exchanges occur in a liminal space of a half-forgotten landscape that exists simultaneously as rural, urban and wasteland, populated with anomalies, chimeras and spectres. Ivory’s landscapes are archaic in tone and her archetypal subjects present a paradoxical discourse which includes the feral and tamed; the worshipped and abandoned; the empowered and the subjugated.
RAZVAN BOAR
Răzvan Boar’s (b. 1982, Romania) perceives his mediums of art as an aggregate structure—a network of interconnected technical elements and layered conventions that surpass its purely physical aspects. Boar’s work taps into culturally significant imagery, drawing inspiration from diverse influences like the Golden Age of Comics, late Modernism, and the advent of Pop Art just to name a few. His process is heavily grounded in his love for drawing, a key method he consistently uses to shape his characters and narratives.
