IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE (room 1)
6 Jul - 15 Sep
IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE
organized by Will Leung
S.H. Kim
In the blink of an eye is the title of the exhibition with which S.H.Kim presents his work for the first time at the Yusto/Giner gallery, which will host the show from June 3 at its Madrid headquarters.
With Japanese and American animations from the 1970s to 2000, Kim combines the nostalgia of that time with contemporary paintings. These works narrate his memories of everyday encounters, such as with landscapes, films or books. With ordinary scenes and popular images as his source, the artist builds a subjective archive.
Among the central themes he pursues in his work, Kim reflects that simplicity, sincerity and authenticity that evokes artists such as Milton Avery or Philip Guston. Known for his bold and thick application of oils and oil pastels in his anime-inspired panels, he succeeds in conveying intimate feelings to the viewer when viewing his paintings.
About the artist:
S.H.Kim (born 1992) is a Korean painter living in New York. He earned his BFA in Painting and BA in Art Studies from Hongik University in South Korea. He is going to receive his Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago this month. Like he scribbled with crayons in his childhood, Kim’s paintings are based on Japanese and American animation from the 1970s to the 2000s. With the materials he uses; oil pastels and oil sticks, his paintings give viewers intimate feelings. His works show how contemporary film and literature with distinct characteristics are reduced down to uniform colors when processed through a consumer. He was featured in a New American Paintings Midwest issue and selected as artists of the month by Artconnect Magazine.
